What is Dearness Allowance and the way it’s calculated

Dearness Allowance or DA is mainly the cost-of-living adjustment allowance that the federal government pays to its staff of the general public sector in addition to pensioners.

The methodology to calculate DA was modified in 2006 by the Government. Currently, DA is calculated as per the next system – For the workers of the Central Government % of DA = {(Avg. of All-India Consumer Price Index (Base yr -2001 =100) for previous 12 months -115.76)/115.76} x 100. On the opposite hand, for Central Public Sector Employees % of DA = {(Avg. of All-India Consumer Price Index (Base yr -2001 =100) for previous 3 months -126.33)/126.33} x 100

Earlier, within the month of March this yr, the Central Government had authorised a 3% hike every within the Dearness Allowance (DA) in addition to Dearness Relief (DR) for the Central authorities staff – offering a giant aid from inflation.

The Dearness allowance for each serving in addition to retired central authorities staff has been elevated to 34%. Previously it was 31%.
