India is the world’s fifth-largest crop seed producer, with high quality crop seed manufacturing growing from 131.6 million metric tonnes in 2017 to 132 million tonnes in 2019. This is because of elevated home meals demand, with consumption of varied crops growing by 18.0 p.c, 16.3 p.c, and 6.0 p.c between 2016 and 2020, respectively.

Recognizing the significance of seeds, International Seeds Day might be noticed on April twenty sixth, 2022. This day is devoted to selling patent-free seeds, non-GMO pure seeds, and farmer rights. Though the federal government issued a seed coverage in 2002 and a seed coverage in 2019, they have been by no means applied attributable to a scarcity of political will.

Seed resilience is outlined as “the adaptability and capacity to contribute to food and nutrition security by making sufficient, diverse, locally adapted, improved, high-quality varieties available to all farmers while taking environmental, health, social, and economic factors into account.”
